One of the main and probably most crucial reasons is that many social sharing sites do not support animated GIFs. And if, they only allow uploads of a certain file size.

Instagram and Facebook, for example, do not support animated GIFs to be shown. You can upload them, but all you will see is the first frame, no animation. Social blogging sites like Tumblr have a restriction in both image dimension and file size when it comes to uploading animated GIFs. Files over 1 MB or larger than a height or width of 500 px can not be uploaded. Or they also show up as still images.

In order to still share your favorite animated GIF, you can easily convert it to video. Video clips are supported by most if not all social media platforms. Thus, the format provides a great way to share your animated GIF.

 

The Tutorial

However, when you try to read up on different rates, you may have also stumbled upon a similar term: baud rate.

 

In order for you not to confuse these two, lets have a look at the differences between baud rate and bitrate.

 

The Difference Between Baud Rate And Bitrate

Formerly, both terms had actually been used interchangeably. At that time, data transmitted was measured both in symbols and bits where one symbol could only contain one bit. Nowadays, however, there has to be a distinction made between the two since symbols can contain more than one bit.

In short, using the terms from above, bitrate and baud rate can be differentiated as such:

  • Bitrate: measures number of transmitted bits
  • Baud rate: measures number of transmitted symbols

 

Hence, while bitrate and baud rate could be used interchangeably in the past due to their same size, they can differ in size by now. The bitrate, depending on the number of bits contained in a symbol, can thus be higher than the baud rate.

 

Another factor that differentiates those two is the limitations. Both are limited by the bandwidth available for the transmission. This maximal bandwidth depends on the media being used. However, since the bitrate can surpass the baud rate, it can still be higher than the maximal baud rate for the available bandwidth. The bit rate can thus be increased without having to increase either baud rate or bandwidth.

HTC Vive

General Information About The HTC Vive

The HTC Vive was developed in cooperation between HTC and Valve with the goal of developing a set of VR glasses for entertainment. They have a resolution of 2160 x 1200 pixels and an update rate of 90Hz.

A front camera integrated in the device enables the insertion of physical objects into the virtual world. Furthermore, the Vive has several, integrated sensors as well as two base stations that enable 360° motion tracking. This is possible thanks to the “Lighthouse” technology developed by Valve. In order to interact with the objects in the virtual world, the HTC Vive comes with two hand-held controllers that are equipped with sensors for motion tracking as well.

For maximal comfort, the Vive has adjustable straps for the head as well as replaceable foam material padding. It is said to be convenient for most wearer of glasses.

Testing The HTC Vive

We tested the VR glasses with a game called “The Lab” that has been developed for virtual reality. Donning the Vive, you step into another world. The controllers function as your virtual hands an operated, at least during our test, flawlessly. When looking around, nothing is juddering and you can move freely in your virtual “cage”. The 360Q view is working perfectly as well.

Before being able to use the Vive, the system with both base sensors has to be installed in the room. The space for it shouldn’t be bigger than 5 x 5 meters or 197 x 197 inches. Once this hurdle is taken, one has to put up with the cables of the VR glasses that oftentimes get in the way and thus slightly diminish the gaming experience. The weight of the glasses can become a bit annoying as well. Thanks to the foam material it doesn’t pinch, however you can still feel the weight.

Alternatives To The HTC Vive

The HTC Vive is, by far, not the only virtual reality device on the market. It’s biggest rival would be the Oculus Rift. Contrary to the Vive, however, the Oculus Rift was thought to be used while sitting or standing. It is not able to track motion in a larger space like the Vive does.

The same can be said about other VR glasses like the Playstation VR. One advantage of the Playstation VR, however, is its price. While you have to pay $ 600 for the Oculus rift and about $ 800 for the HTC Vive, the Playstation VR comes at a price of “just” $400. One has to take into account that the usage of a Playstation VR also requires a Playstation and controllers.

The Oculus Rift as well as the HTC Vive require a PC that can fulfill the high system requirements of the VR devices. Before getting such high priced VR glasses, it is thus advised to check if your PC or console is able to meet the technological requirements of a virtual reality device.

4K, HD, HQ, SD – What’s The Difference?

SD

SD is the abbreviation of “Standard Definition”. As the name already suggests, it was the standard quality of movies and other videos for a long time.

The resolution of SD has long been measured using the vertical resolution of lines. In South and North America as well as some other countries like Japan, the typical resolution of SD is 480i (also referred to as 480p). In Europe, Africa, Australia and most of Asia, however, the resolution is 576i.

Compared to its successors, videos shot in SD appear in a far lower quality when watched on a big screen. When watching videos on a smaller screen (like a tablet or smartphone) the difference is not as striking. On a TV or bigger computer screen, however, an SD video appears in low quality.

 

HQ

HQ stands for “High Quality”. Contrary to the other qualities, when talking about a HQ movie, the screen resolution and thus the pixels per line do not play a role. High quality videos are defined by an increased bitrate which leads to an overall better quality of the pictures shown. This is, compared to SD. When comparing HQ videos to HD videos, the quality of HQ doesn’t quite hold up.

HD

The most commonly known quality or screen resolution when talking about movies nowadays is HD. It stands for “High Definition” and the resolution of such videos is far better and higher than of SD videos. HD videos have a bigger file size when stored and require longer loading times when watching or streaming (e.g. on YouTube). Yet, they set out and succeeded over the SD format with most modern television and video playing devices being “HD-ready”, supporting movies filmed in HD.

The picture quality of HD is far more advanced compared to SD. Usually, all videos with more horizontal lines than SD can be considered HD. Yet, the typical resolutions are 720p and 1080p (also called “full HD”).

 

 

4K

Last but certainly not least, lets have a look at 4K. 4K is the new kid in town and already one of the biggest players. Many filmmakers already shoot their movies in 4K for improved quality and thus more viewing pleasure. It’s already starting to be implemented in the manifacturing of newest television sets as well as some of them are already “4K-ready”. Still, 4K has not quite gained the popularity of the HD format just yet.

The 4K resolution is typically referred to as 2160p, however there are still two standards to distinguish from one another: DCI & UHD-1.

  • DCI is the standard used in filming movies and thus in cinemas. The typical resolution is 4096 x 2160 pixel

With new compression algorithms available now, lossless compressed files are preserved better than ever before. Using lossless compression to compress a file, will rewrite the data in the same manner as that of the original file. However, audio and image files compressed using lossless compression, will tend to be larger in size than that of lossy.

If you are willing to accept minor losses of a file’s original quality as a means to compensate for saving space, then you can choose lossy compression. However, if you are not that really concerned about space, or want to keep your file in its original state, then lossless is your best option. Many experts agree that if you have the space, then going with lossless is recommended. The reasons for choosing to compress files using lossless compression are several. For one, after the file has been compressed using the lossless format, it can be restored or converted again back to the original state without any losses. In addition, lossless compression, allows the original data to be completely and fully reconstructed from the original compressed data afterwards.
