Adobe Creative Cloud

Every graphic designer needs their tools and applications to ensure that they are able to design properly. The Adobe Creative Cloud has got everything that a graphic designer requires, which includes the InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop as well. Open Apple PAGES Files Without iWork

Original image by Renato Mitra

Different word processing software produce different document files with different file extensions. From Microsoft Word we all know DOC and DOCX, and the open source programs use files with the ODT extension. Yet, users of Apple Mac computers or devices running with the OS X also know one more: PAGES.

The native Mac word processing program Apple Pages allows you to save documents in the PAGES format. However, opening such files when you don’t have Pages on  your MAc or iWork on your computer is difficult. While the Pages program is able top open Microsoft Word’s DOC and DOCX files, you can not open PAGES documents in Word.

If you received a PAGES document from an Apple user, or want to open your PAGES text file on another computer, we can show you how to easily open them without having to install iWork!

Every PAGES document file also contains a text file of the stored information. With a little trick, this embedded file can be extracted in a few simple steps. Depending on your PAGES document, it can be a PDF or XML document.

1. Navigate to your PAGES document. Change the file extension from .pages to .zip and confirm that you want to make this change. This will change not only the way your computer will handle the file, but also it’s icon.

2. Extract the the newly created zip folder. It will have the same name as the previous PAGES document. Open the extracted folder. There, you will find several folders. I found the document with the content information in a folder called “word”. It is called “document.xml”.

3. You can open the XML document in a text processing program or browser. However, this will result in a document containing all the html and xml tags. To prevent this, rename the file from .xml to .html

4. Now, you can open the document in a browser. The tags will be gone and only the extracted text will be left.

5. If you found a PDF document instead of a XML text file, you can use it directly. If you want to use the text further, you can also convert the PDF to DOC or another document file.

Best Open Source Video and Music Players

Video and Music Player
Image by Gustavo da Cunha Pimenta

Computers function as full entertainment systems by now. This means that the programs you have on your computer must be able to play music as well as videos and movies. On Windows computers, you have the Windows Media Player for this, and Mac users oftentimes rely on the Quicktime Player.

However, there are formats that are not supported by those operating system native programs. Over the past years, they have developed, featuring more settings, features, and functions. Yet, some open source programs still offer a better handling, a more pleasing design, and more functions to enhance your viewing or listening pleasure.

This is the reason why we decided to give you a short overview of free open source video and music players for your desktop computer – whether it is running on Windows or Mac OS.

VLC Player

VLC is probably the number one go-to Media Player across all kinds of operating systems. Versions of the player are available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Unix, and others. Furthermore, there are versions of the VLC Player for mobile devices as well that run on either iOS or Android.

The universal media player is also easy to customize. Many different apps and extensions can be added to the player, expanding it with regard to available functions and features. All extensions can be seen here. Furthermore, the player supports subtitles and different audio tracks, as well as changes in playback speed, brightness and contrast, and hue and saturation.

VLC features a great variety of different video and audio codecs that are supported without any further codec packs needed. The following files can be watched or listened to in the VLC Player:

  • 3GP
  • ASF
  • AVI
  • FLV
  • MKV
  • MOV
  • MP4
  • MPEG
  • MXF
  • OGM
  • WMV
  • AAC
  • FLAC
  • MIDI
  • MP3
  • OGG
  • WAV
  • WMA

Next to playing music and video files stored on your computer’s hard drive, the player also supports DVDs, CDs, VCDs, Webcam streams, and some other streaming services as well. For more information about streaming services supported, please refer here.

KM Player

The KM Player is, albeit not as well known as the VLC Player, a very versatile media player. However, it is not available for as many operating systems and devices. There is a desktop version available for computers running on Windows, as well as apps for iOS and Android devices. Via the beta version of KMP Connect, several devices with the KM Player installed can be connected. Thus, the music and movie library can be accessed from a mobile phone as well as from a laptop.

Subtitles and different audio tracks are also supported by the KM Player.

In the following, you find an extracted list of file formats supported by the KM Player. Similar to the VLC Player, several video and audio codecs are supported by the media player.

  • 3GP
  • ASF
  • AVI
  • FLV
  • MKV
  • MOV
  • MP4
  • MPG
  • MPEG

  • MP3
  • OGG
  • RA
  • WAV
  • WMA

Additionally to playing files stored on the hard drive, the KM Player supports the playback of Blu-Ray discs, DVDs, audio and video CDs, and Webcam support.

Another media player that is distributed under open source standards is the PotPlayer. Developed from the former KM Player developers, the Daum PotPlayer has a very striking similarity with the previously named media player. However, the player is only available for Windows computers.

Next to brightness and contrast settings, users of the PotPlayer also have access to an audio equalizer.

On the official website as well as around the net, it is stated that the player supports most video and audio formats, however, there is no complete list available. Next to video and audio files, the PotPlayer also supports playback of Webcam recordings and analog as well as digital TV.

Initially not free, Winamp has been around the interwebs for a long time. Since version 2, the player is distributed as freemium. The media player is available for both Mac OS and Windows computers. Furthermore, there is a version available for Android phones and tablets.

Several plug-ins and different skins enable the user to customize Winamp to their liking.

The following file formats, among others, are supported by Winamp:

  • ASF
  • ASX
  • AVI
  • FLV

How To Write an eBook

You will soon find that the more words and time you put into writing content as a freelance writer, the more you are rewarded. But what if you wanted to get super efficient, or simply have a deadline that you are struggling to meet. Before you compromise on quality, check out these steps.

Break It Down

Start with your numerical goal. Not monetary figures, but words. If your topic starts with something serious like ‘ The Ultimate Guide…’ then you might need the freedom of 10, 000 words or maybe even a little more to get the job done. The best strategy is to at least work on a longer and complex eBook once every ten months, and publish smaller ones in the time in middle.

Break the book into 2000 words and so on. Most blog posts are usually in the range of 1000 and 2000 words. This is what typically is recommended for most bloggers, even though many times longer and short posts do the trick. Sometimes, writing an eBook can easily look like an impossible task. However, writing 10 blogs does not always fare bad with a lot of people. For example, if you need to jot down 17000 words in one eBook, break it into 10 chunks of chapters, or sections, or anything that goes with the format of your eBook.

You will most probably be breaking down into sections like Introduction, The Why, Top Tips, Figures, Case Study, etc.

When you are starting out, it helps to brainstorm a list first. Plus, this way you will also be able to assess that anything that can be explained in another section does not need to be separately repeated in another chapter. You never know you might just think of something that you missed out. Moreover, if you are organized, things get done faster too.

Write These Chunks

It is okay and works if you approach each chunk that you have chosen as a mini book. This way you will be able to properly give each an introduction, fill it with supporting points and a conclusion. You are not only making things easier for yourself but also for people who are skipping to sections straight from the Table of Contents.

A good idea would be to simply outline everything that goes further into each section and take cues from there so that there is nothing to stop you from simply writing away the eBook.

Read It Like A Reader Would

Read the final draft from the start to finish and then evaluate what you think of it. You may come across new ideas that you missed or think that something is really irrelevant in an eBook.

Check out the eBook converter on our site, all you have to do is input the document and we will do the rest.

Convert Tracker Music Files To MP3

Do you remember tracker music?

Back in the 1980’s, a new and up to then pretty unique way to make music appeared. Using so-called music sequencer software, users of the Commodore Amiga were able to create music. The focus of this kind of music was mostly on creating soundtracks for video games.

Using you can now convert your tracker music into more modern and commonly supported music file formats! On the occasion of this newly added support, we decided to have a look at tracker music, the file formats associated with it, and how you can turn your tracker “songs” into MP3 or other audio formats.

What Is Tracker?

Tracker music contains of independent musical notes that are arranged in one of several channels in a set time frame. The interface of a music tracker is numeric, and commands can be entered via a computer keyboard. Thus, the entered commands form a pattern consisting of letters, numbers, and other digits. These patterns can have independent timelines. Combined, they create a so-called master list of concatenated patterns, representing one “song”.

For a list of music tracker programs you can click here.

Over the Years

Tracker music was especially popular because the files were agreeably small while retaining a certain quality. This was especially important in the 1990’s when data was still saved on floppy disks that provide restricted storage space. Trackers were also widely used for music playback on portable devices like the Game Boy Advance.

Even though tracker music files got replaced by other music files over time, the tracks are still popular with nowadays electronic music.

Tracker Music Files

The file formats in which tracker music is stored are commonly known as module files. However, there are several different file extensions for such modules. The files contain information about the instrument samples used, as well as a sequence list which tells the player when to play which note, tone, or effect.

The following list lists the ones that are supported by our online converter:

Best Free Photo Collage Makers

Pictures and photos are a great way to visualize the content of your articles. But sometimes, that is just not enough! And sometimes, sharing your vacation pictures on Facebook using the album feature just isn’t enough either. If you have your pictures in a digitized form, why not try something else? Make a Photo Collage!

Collages are a beautiful and visually appealing way to group pictures from one event or taken in the same style, and present them in a stunning manner. Such collages can be created using photo books or your trusted photo editing software. However, there are great alternatives on the web as well, that do not require any download and installation.

Today, we want to present to you one of these photo collage makers:

Make Your Own Photo Collage

FotoJetFotoJet is a very versatile online photo collage maker with different templates, styles, and occasions to choose from.

Don’t worry, even though it is an online service, FotoJet states that the pictures you upload to use are neither public, nor are you giving away any rights to FotoJet or any third party.

Lets have a look how you can create your own collage, card, poster, or even social media post.

Choose a Layout

The first thing to do after entering the collage maker is to choose the layout most appealing to you. According to FotoJet, you can choose from one of 320+ designs and layouts. You can browse them by occasion, style, popularity. You can even create a Facebook banner or a picture fitting for a social media post.

When in doubt, hovering over the layout will reveal how many photos you can use. After choosing one, a double click or hitting the “Choose” button will lead you to the next step.

For this review, we have chosen a wedding themed photo card that allows us to include two pictures.

Editing your Collage

After choosing the layout, you can add the photos you want to use. They can be locates somewhere on your computer or hard drive, or you can use pictures form your Facebook account. This, of course, requires allowing access to the web application.

The photos can easily be added to the collage or photo card via drag and drop (or using the auto fill option). Once you added your pictures, you are provided with some basic image editing options as well. Zoom or rotate the pictures, add a filter, or change saturation, hue, contrast, and the like until the pictures either match the layout you chose, or your very own taste.

Depending on the layout you chose, the different text layers can be edited as well. Several fonts – ranging from hand-written to serifs – are provided, but you can also use the fonts installed on your computer. Changes can be applied with regard to text alignment, style (bold, italic, etc.), size, and color.

The only downside to this is that you are unable to change or re-arrange the icons or patterns used in the layout, as well as the text areas.

Share and Save your Collage

FotoJetOnce you perfected your collage or photo card, you can either save it on your computer, or share it on Facebook.

When sharing your design on Facebook, you can enter a custom text and choose the size of your picture. Connect to Facebook and post your wedding invitation, thank you card, or photo collage on your wall.

FotoJetSaving your collage on your computer provides you with a few extra options. In addition to setting the name for your design, you can choose between different quality and sizes, as well as the image file format you want to use. However, the only options given here are JPG and PNG. You can easily convert your finished collage to another image file format like TIFF or TGA though.

Unfortunately, saving your collage to any cloud storage or publishing it on social media pages like Pinterest, Twitter, or Google+ is not supported.

And that was it, that’s how simple it can be to create your own photo collage online. After you’re done, you can go back and create a new collage, Facebook cover image, or invitation – whatever you wish.

Collage Features of other Image Editing Programs

You may already know the following web services from our article on the best free image editing programs. While they all focus on image editing more than collage making, they still offer said feature. However, in a more rudimentary way than the one mentioned above. Nevertheless, we wanted to quickly show them as well.

Creating a collage using PicMonkey allows you to choose from a few pre-defined layouts (without any design), or to arrange the pictures you uploaded from your computer to your liking. After setting the options for spacing, rounded corners of your images, and the background, you can further edit the image as a whole.

Editing single pictures in the collage as well as certain layouts are features available to premium users.

The BeFunky online image editor also provides the possibility to create a collage, Facebook cover, or Pinterest image using pictures from your computer, Facebook, or your BeFunky account if you have one. You can choose from different layouts (excluding designs) and edit the background as well as some other additional settings. After saving, you can edit the whole collage or card in the BeFunky Photo Editor as well.

Certain layouts and editing options are so-called BeFunky plus features though and not available in the free version.

The Pixlr Express Web Application also provides a collage feature. You can upload images from your computer and choose one of the more rudimentary layouts. What sets Pixlr apart from the other two collage features mentioned above is that you can edit each picture individually as well as the collage as a whole.

Unfortunately, the layouts provided aren’t as “advanced” as the other and lack any design as well.
